We present a plausible counterexample to cosmic censorship in four dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions. Smooth initial data evolves to a region of arbitrarily large curvature that is visible to distant observers. Our example is based on a holographic model of an electrically charged, localised defect which was previously studied at zero temperature. We partially extend those results to nonzero temperatures.

  1. Weak Cosmic Censorship with spinning particles in Kerr-(A)dS spacetimes

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Extremal Kerr-de Sitter black holes cannot be overspun by spinning test particles, and apparent Kerr-anti-de Sitter overspinning configurations are eliminated once the particle's finite size is respected.

  2. Violating Weak Cosmic Censorship in AdS$_3$ via Gedanken Experiment

    hep-th 2025-08 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Under the test-particle approximation, an extremal quantum-corrected BTZ black hole can have its horizon destroyed by a particle with large angular momentum, giving a potential counterexample to weak cosmic censorship.
