We consider a class of matrix integrals over the unitary group $U(N)$ with an infinite set of couplings characterized by a series $f(q)=\sum_{n \ge 1} a_n q^n$, with $a_n \in \mathbb{Z}$. Such integrals arise in physics as the partition functions of free four-dimensional gauge theories on $S^3$ and, in particular, as the superconformal index of super Yang-Mills theory. We show that any such model can be expressed in terms of a system of free fermions in an ensemble parameterized by the infinite set of couplings. Integrating out the fermions in a given quantum state leads to a convergent expansion as a series of determinants, as shown by Borodin-Okounkov many years ago. By further averaging over the ensemble, we obtain a formula for the matrix integral as a $q$-series with successive terms suppressed by $q^{\alpha N + \beta}$ where $\alpha$, $\beta$ do not depend on $N$. This provides a matrix-model explanation of the giant graviton expansion that has been observed recently in the literature.

  1. Interior zeros of supersymmetric indices

    hep-th 2026-07 accept novelty 7.0

Interior zeros of a supersymmetric index exist iff its arithmetic coefficients δ(ν) grow exponentially at rate set by the nearest zero, detectable from finitely many q-series terms.

  2. Equal-charge projection of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ index: exact large-$N$ formula and finite-rank $U(3)$ coefficients

    hep-th 2026-07 accept novelty 7.0

Equal-charge projection of the N=4 index admits an exact large-N factorization into a pentagonal prefactor times the cube of the partition function, and finite-rank U(3) coefficients populate the resulting zero interv...

  3. Fermionic trace relations and supersymmetric indices at finite $N$

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 7.0

The supersymmetric index in a one-fermion matrix model for N=4 SYM is independent of N due to exact cancellations between bosonic and fermionic trace relations.

  4. Line operator indices of S-fold theories

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

Line-operator Schur indices for S-fold theories are matched to Wilson-'t Hooft indices in rank-2 N=4 SYM once giant graviton corrections are included, with new fivebrane-junction indices derived for k=3,4,6.

  5. Unitary matrix models, quantized symmetric functions and spin chain

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

Unitary matrix models are mapped to vacuum correlators of quantized symmetric functions in the N-magnon sector of a spin chain via Schur orthogonality.

  6. Quiver superconformal index and giant gravitons: asymptotics and expansions

For toric quiver theories, coefficients of the large-N superconformal index grow like exp(constant*sqrt(n)) times n^((m-5)/4) for the A-hat_m family, with polynomial growth for dP3 and Y^{p,0}.
