We revisit the adiabatic conversion between the QCD axion and axion-like particle (ALP) at level crossing, which can occur in the early universe as a result of the existence of a hypothetical mass mixing. This is similar to the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect in neutrino oscillations. After refining the conditions for the adiabatic conversion to occur, we focus on a scenario where the ALP produced by the adiabatic conversion of the QCD axion explains the observed dark matter abundance. Interestingly, we find that the ALP decay constant can be much smaller than the ordinary case in which the ALP is produced by the realignment mechanism. As a consequence, the ALP-photon coupling is enhanced by a few orders of magnitude, which is advantageous for the future ALP and axion-search experiments using the ALP-photon coupling.

  1. The structure of multi-axion solutions to the strong CP problem

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Multi-axion theories solving the strong CP problem produce varied mass-coupling relations via a general sum rule that depends on the details of PQ symmetry breaking and anomaly alignments.

  2. The structure of multi-axion solutions to the strong CP problem

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Multi-axion solutions to the strong CP problem produce varied mass-coupling patterns set by PQ symmetry breaking structure and QCD-EM anomaly alignment, summarized by a general sum rule for N-axion systems.

Projections for IAXO in two-axion parameter space plus spectral analysis of flavor oscillations show where the experiment can discriminate multi-axion signals from single-axion ones, extending to N-axion cases.

  4. Stochastic Axion Mixing: A General Mechanism Beyond Decay Constant Constraints

    hep-ph 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Stochastic axion mixing is a broad mechanism for axion interactions in multi-axion systems that occurs naturally under distinct mass conditions and does not depend on decay constant hierarchies.

  5. Completing Axion Double Level Crossings

    hep-ph 2025-08 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Double level crossings are common in multi-axion mass mixing of Z_N axions and ALPs, occurring multiple times for large N in the light axion case but prevented by excessively large or small N in light and heavy scenar...
