We study the evolution of Hernquist profile ``galaxies'' in the presence of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), where the properties of the dark matter can be parameterized by one number, sigma-hat = sigma M/a^2 for a halo of mass M and break radius a. While the halos form constant density cores of size a/2 on the core radius relaxation time scale core collapse begins shortly thereafter and a steeper 1/r^2 central density cusp starts forming faster than predicted by 2-body relaxation. The formation of the steeper central cusp is accelerated if the cooling baryons adiabatically compress the dark matter. The natural consequence of SIDM is to exacerbate rather than to mitigate astrophysical problems created by dark matter density cusps.

  1. Cooling, conduction, compact objects: Gravothermal evolution of dissipative self-interacting dark matter halos

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Dissipation in SIDM halos inverts heat conduction, suppresses isothermal cores, and explains an observed strong lens perturber with smaller cross sections or shorter times than the elastic case.

  2. A Novel Implementation of Self-Interacting Dark Matter in AREPO

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 6.5

A dedicated-tree Monte-Carlo SIDM module in AREPO-2 conserves energy/momentum under multiple scatters, supports velocity-dependent and inelastic models, and runs with only modest overhead versus CDM except in late cor...

  3. Self-interacting dark matter promotes bar formation in disk galaxies

    astro-ph.GA 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0

SIDM halos accelerate bar formation and growth in disk galaxies through enhanced angular momentum exchange, independent of core formation.

  4. MARVELously Dark: the density profile evolution of dwarf halos in velocity-dependent SIDM

    astro-ph.GA 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0

In a new SIDM simulation of isolated dwarf halos, nine low-mass halos are core-collapsed, and inner density slope—rather than central density—best tracks collapse onset and matches analytic collapse-time predictions.

  5. Calibrating the SIDM Gravothermal Catastrophe with N-body Simulations

    astro-ph.GA 2025-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

N-body simulations with Arepo calibrate the β parameter in the SIDM gravothermal model, showing it is independent of cross-section, concentration, and mass for velocity-independent scattering, and introduce an effecti...
