We study aspects of confinement in the M theory fivebrane version of QCD (MQCD). We show heavy quarks are confined in hadrons (which take the form of membrane-fivebrane bound states) for N=1 and softly broken N=2 SU(Nc) MQCD. We explore and clarify the transition from the exotic physics of the latter to the standard physics of the former. In particular, the many strings and quark-antiquark mesons found in N=2 field theory by Douglas and Shenker are reproduced. It is seen that in the N=1 limit all but one such meson disappears while all of the strings survive. The strings of softly broken N=2, N=1, and even non-supersymmetric SU(Nc) MQCD have a common ratio for their tensions as a function of the amount of flux they carry. We also comment on the almost BPS properties of the Douglas-Shenker strings and discuss the brane picture for monopole confinement on N=2 QCD Higgs branches.

  1. Localised Horizons and Holographic Thermodynamics: Supercooling in the 1/D Expansion

    hep-th 2026-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

For a large class of holographic confining gauge theories far from conformality, the maximum supercooling equals half the squared speed of sound at the critical temperature, up to 1/D corrections.

  2. Formation and scaling of $\mathbb{Z}_N$ strings for global $\mathrm{SU}(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In a global SU(N)/Z_N scalar model, Z_N-string networks with baryon-vertex-like junctions reach a scaling regime for N=2,3,4,5,8, with string density proportional to N^2-1.

  3. Unified description of color-electric and color-magnetic strings in hybrid vacua of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD

    hep-th 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

Exact twisted superpotential on non-Abelian string world sheets in hybrid r-vacua yields precise matching of 2D kink masses to 4D confined monopoles and quarks.
