The effects of stochasticity on the luminosities of stellar populations are an often neglected but crucial element for understanding populations in the low mass or low star formation rate regime. To address this issue, we present SLUG, a new code to "Stochastically Light Up Galaxies". SLUG synthesizes stellar populations using a Monte Carlo technique that treats stochastic sampling properly including the effects of clustering, the stellar initial mass function, star formation history, stellar evolution, and cluster disruption. This code produces many useful outputs, including i) catalogs of star clusters and their properties, such as their stellar initial mass distributions and their photometric properties in a variety of filters, ii) two dimensional histograms of color-magnitude diagrams of every star in the simulation, iii) and the photometric properties of field stars and the integrated photometry of the entire simulated galaxy. After presenting the SLUG algorithm in detail, we validate the code through comparisons with starburst99 in the well-sampled regime, and with observed photometry of Milky Way clusters. Finally, we demonstrate the SLUG's capabilities by presenting outputs in the stochastic regime. SLUG is publicly distributed through the website http://sites.google.com/site/runslug/.

  1. Survival is not Enough: Dust Sputtering, Growth, and H$_2$ Formation in Galactic Winds

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.5

Entrained clouds form high H2 fractions only with dust growth at densities ≳10–30 times the cloud-survival critical density; without growth, DGR dilution and sputtering keep them atomic.

  2. Spirited Away: Advective Loss of Cosmic Rays into the Milky Way's Circumgalactic Medium Explains the Large Magellanic Cloud's Low Gamma-ray Luminosity

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

Cosmic rays advected out of the Large Magellanic Cloud by its passage through the Milky Way's circumgalactic medium explain the galaxy's low gamma-ray luminosity.

  3. The complex stellar system M 22: constraining the chemical enrichment from AGB stars using magnesium isotope ratios

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

First Mg isotope measurements at [Fe/H]≈-2 in a globular cluster show no difference tied to s-process enrichment, favoring ~2.75 M_sun AGB polluters and a 280–480 Myr age gap.

  4. The complex stellar system M 22: confirming abundance variations with high precision differential measurements

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

High-precision differential abundances confirm M 22 hosts a >0.24 dex iron spread and ~0.65 dex s-process spread, and reveal new internal abundance variations within each population.
