The dynamics of merging black hole binaries with small mass-ratios (SMR) can be expressed as a series in the symmetric mass-ratio, the post-adiabatic expansion. Using numerical relativity simulations, we compute the first three terms in this series for quasicircular non-spinning binaries. We recover the leading term predicted by SMR perturbation theory, and obtain a robust prediction of the 1-post-adiabatic term. The 2-post-adiabatic term is found to be small, indicating that the 1PA approximation may be quite accurate even for nearly comparable mass binaries. We also estimate the range of applicability for SMR and post-Newtonian series for non-spinning, quasi-circular inspirals.

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0

Perturbation theory around flat space fails before black hole formation once peak luminosity exceeds ~10^-2 L_Planck; near criticality the spectrum flattens to 1/ω, matching the prediction from discrete self-similarity.

  2. Quadrupole and quadratic-in-spin effects in quasicircular, spinning, asymmetric binaries

    gr-qc 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Calculates energy fluxes with quadratic-in-spin and quadrupole effects for small-mass-ratio spinning binaries in self-force theory, providing numerical data and sixth-order PN expansions.

  3. Modified Teukolsky Formalism for Extreme Mass-Ratio Inspirals in Higher-Derivative Gravity

    gr-qc 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Develops modified Teukolsky formalism for EMRIs in higher-derivative gravity and computes horizon and infinity fluxes for cubic gravity example.

  4. Black hole mergers beyond general relativity: a self-force approach

    gr-qc 2025-10 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Self-force theory is extended to compute merger and ringdown waveforms in beyond-GR black hole binaries under the extreme mass-ratio approximation, with first calculations of self-force corrections to the merger waveform.

  5. Probing Direct Waves in Black Hole Ringdowns

    gr-qc 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0

Merger gravitational wave signals contain a 'direct wave' from the plunging companions, screened by the remnant's potential, with frequency near the superradiant value for high-spin remnants and SNR above 10 in GW1509...

  6. Accurate models for recoil velocity distribution in black hole mergers with comparable to extreme mass-ratios and their astrophysical implications

    gr-qc 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0

New analytic, GPR, and normalizing-flow kick models for black-hole mergers trained from q=1 to q≈200, with cluster-retention consequences.

  7. Post-adiabatic self-force waveforms: slowly spinning primary and precessing secondary

    gr-qc 2025-10 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Extended 1PA self-force waveforms for slowly spinning primary and precessing secondary, with re-summed 1PAT1R variant showing improved accuracy against NR for q ≳ 5 and |χ1| ≲ 0.1.

  8. Consistency of spin effects between numerical relativity and perturbation theory for inspiraling comparable-mass black hole binaries

    gr-qc 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0

Adiabatic point-particle black hole perturbation theory reproduces numerical-relativity spin effects in comparable-mass inspirals to within ~1%, so only small spin-dependent post-adiabatic corrections are needed.
