abstract

Time-varying dark energy is often modeled in observational analyses through generic parameterizations of its equation of state $w(z)$, which typically use two free parameters $\{w_0, w_a\}$ to span a broad range of behaviors as a function of redshift. However, this broad range of behaviors can only approximately capture the dynamics of any given microphysical theory of dark energy. A complementary approach is to use targeted parameterizations designed to model specific classes of dynamical dark energy with greater precision. Focusing on the class of thawing dark energy, we quantify and compare the precision with which nineteen generic and targeted parameterizations can capture the dynamics of physically motivated thawing quintessence theories. We find that a targeted parameterization derived from a Pad\'e expansion of $w$ is the most reliable of these, producing accurate reconstructions of $w(z)$, the expansion history $H(z)$, and cosmological parameters such as $H_0$ and $\Omega_m$ for a broad range of microphysical theories.

  1. Phantom-divide crossing and suppressed structure growth in kinetically braided dark energy with momentum exchange

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A linearly stable kinetic-braiding dark-energy model with CDM momentum exchange realizes upward phantom-divide crossing and weak CDM gravitational clustering, altering matter and CMB spectra.

  2. Sound Mode and Scale-Dependent Growth in Two-Fluid Dynamical Dark Energy

    astro-ph.CO 2026-03 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

DDE sound modes induce scale-dependent growth and halo bias comparable to massless neutrinos; multi-tracer P+B forecasts detect it for c_s^{2} ~ 10^{-2}–10^{-4}, while lower speeds produce ~10% drag on cluster growth-...

  3. Realizing the phantom-divide crossing with vector and scalar fields

    astro-ph.CO 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A scalar-vector-tensor dark-energy model crosses the phantom divide at low redshift with no ghost or Laplacian instabilities and growth signatures close to LCDM.

  4. BAO miscalibration cannot rescue late-time solutions to the Hubble tension

    astro-ph.CO 2025-10 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

Even after rescaling BAO data to prefer H0≈73 km/s/Mpc, none of six tested late-time dark-energy models can resolve the Hubble tension once unanchored SNeIa and CMB geometry are included.

  5. Simple quintessence models in light of DESI-BAO observations

    astro-ph.CO 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Thawing quintessence with linear or quadratic potentials is favored over LambdaCDM only when the DESY5 supernova catalog is used; with Pantheon+ or Union3 the preference is mild.

  6. Examining Quintessence Models with DESI Data

    astro-ph.CO 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

NEC-obeying hilltop and exponential quintessence models give at most marginal improvement over the cosmological constant against DESI 2024 data, and the prominent k=10 hilltop 'excellent mimic' claim is an artifact of...

  7. Updated observational constraints on $\phi$CDM dynamical dark energy cosmological models

    astro-ph.CO 2025-09 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Updated φCDM constraints from Planck 2018 + non-CMB data find α=0.055±0.041, consistent with a cosmological constant and only mildly favoring evolving quintessence.

  8. Scalar field dark energy models: Current and forecast constraints

    astro-ph.CO 2025-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Combining BAO, CMB, weak lensing, supernova, and strong-lensing data, the authors infer w0 = -0.904 +/- 0.034 for thawing scalar-field dark energy, 2.9 sigma from LCDM.

  9. Robustness of dark energy phenomenology across different parameterizations

    astro-ph.CO 2025-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

The viability of minimally and non-minimally coupled quintessence models is robust across CPL, JBP, BA, and EXP parameterizations, with all four reproducing the models' predicted observables accurately.

  10. The Status of Single Scalar Field Dark Energy

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 4.5 of 10

Cosmological data can constrain only a handful of EFT parameters for single-scalar dark energy; extended models show modest preference over Λ but remain underdetermined and challenged by fifth forces and screening.

  11. Observational constraints on early time non-phantom behaviour of dynamical dark energy

    astro-ph.CO 2025-12 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Early scaling dark energy is constrained to be less than about one percent at matter-radiation equality and is disfavored by model selection, while late-time CPL dynamics show only a weak preference away from ΛCDM.

  12. Constraints on Dark Energy Models Using Late Universe Probes

    astro-ph.CO 2025-06 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Using late-universe probes only, the authors find all dark energy models remain within 1-2 sigma of Lambda CDM, which wins the Bayesian model comparison, and confirm that DESI's LRG1 and LRG2 points drive the dynamica...

  13. Topological defects as effective dynamical dark energy

    hep-ph 2025-06 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A few percent domain-wall component gives a mild (Δχ² = -1.72) improvement over ΛCDM when fitting DESI DR2 BAO and DESY5 supernovae, but the evidence is inconclusive.

  14. Breaking Free from the Swampland of Impossible Universes through the DESI Portal

    astro-ph.CO 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

DESI data indicating evolving dark energy may allow string theory to describe observed universes without violating swampland constraints on constant dark energy.
