Motivated by black hole physics, we define the Unruh state for a scalar field in de Sitter space. Like the Bunch-Davies state, the Unruh-de Sitter state appears thermal to a static observer. However, it breaks some of the symmetries of de Sitter space. We calculate the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor in the Unruh-de Sitter state in two dimensions and find a non-vanishing flux of outgoing negative energy. Extrapolating the result to four dimensions, we argue that this backreacts on the initial de Sitter geometry semi-classically. Notably, we estimate that de Sitter space is destabilized on a timescale set by the gravitational entropy; analogous to black hole evaporation, the endpoint of this instability is a singular geometry outside the regime of effective field theory. Finally, we suggest that the Unruh-de Sitter state may be a natural initial state for patches of de Sitter space, and discuss the implications for slow-roll and eternal inflation, and for de Sitter thermodynamics.

  1. Thermality Breakdown in Null-Shifted Rindler Wedges

    hep-th 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Massive fields in null-shifted Rindler wedges produce non-thermal spectra for accelerated observers, as mass eliminates the exponential Bogoliubov mixing that creates thermality.

  2. Four inequivalent paths to Thermality in Minkowski spacetime

    hep-th 2026-01 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Null-shifted Rindler wedges yield selective non-Gibbsian thermality in one chiral sector via Bogoliubov transformations, with the global Minkowski state remaining pure.

  3. Tests of restricted Quantum Focusing and a new CFT bound

    hep-th 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0

From rQFC, a new CFT bound follows that forbids the QNEC from saturating faster than O(Σ^{d−2}) in near-vacuum states, while rQFC is proven in JT gravity and explicit QFC counterexamples are constructed.

  4. The fate of Reissner--Nordstr\"om--de Sitter black holes: nonequilibrium discharge and evaporation

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Semiclassical RN-dS evaporation via 2D dilaton gravity and anomaly flux yields monotonic neutral mass loss and rapid discharge, making classical equilibrium loci non-attractors and leading to empty de Sitter space.

  5. The fate of Schwarzschild--de Sitter black holes: nonequilibrium evaporation

    hep-th 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0

In the Unruh–de Sitter state the anomaly flux J=(N/48π)(κ_b²−κ_c²) is positive throughout the static patch, so every neutral SdS black hole evaporates monotonically and only the Nariai limit has zero flux.
