abstract

The quark-gluon plasma produced by collisions between ultra-relativistic heavy nuclei is well described in the language of hydrodynamics. Non-central collisions are characterized by very large angular momentum, which in a fluid system manifests as flow vorticity. This rotational structure can lead to a spin polarization of the hadrons that eventually emerge from the plasma, providing experimental access to flow substructure at unprecedented detail. Recently, first observations of $\Lambda$ hyperon polarization along the direction of collisional angular momentum have been reported. These measurements are in broad agreement with hydrodynamic and transport-based calculations and reveal that the QGP is the most vortical fluid ever observed. However, there remain important tensions between theory and observation which might be fundamental in nature. In the relatively mature field of heavy ion physics, the discovery of global hyperon polarization and three-dimensional simulations of the collision have opened an entirely new direction of research. We discuss the current status of this rapidly developing area and directions for future research.

  1. Chromomagnetic condensation and perturbative confinement induced by imaginary rotation in SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory

    hep-ph 2026-02 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

In SU(2) Yang-Mills, imaginary rotation is shown to induce a chromomagnetic condensate and to turn the perturbative confinement transition first-order, with phase boundary approaching Ω̃_c = π/√3.

  2. Static Quark-Antiquark Interactions Under Rotation

    hep-lat 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In quenched SU(3) lattice gluodynamics, imaginary rotation suppresses bare Polyakov free energies above Tc with a bulk shift well fit by A R_xy^2 + B, while the T≈0 static potential shows no significant rotation dependence.

  3. Fluid Acceleration in Heavy-Ion Collisions

    nucl-th 2026-03 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In AMPT and UrQMD simulations, fluid acceleration in heavy-ion collisions reaches a few hundred MeV, peaks at fireball boundaries, and evolves from stopping-dominated deceleration at low energies to boundary/tilt puls...

  4. Tensor spin polarization induced by curved freeze-out hypersurface

    hep-ph 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The curvature of the freeze-out hypersurface induces a tensor spin polarization of vector mesons at leading gradient order, with predicted phi-meson spin alignment around -10^-4 to -10^-3.

  5. Weak Bose-Einstein condensation in a rigidly rotating magnetized charged Bose gas

    hep-ph 2026-07 reject novelty 5.0 of 10

Rigid rotation does not restore a sharp BEC transition in a magnetized charged Bose gas; it only changes thermodynamics, and can flip the magnetic response toward paramagnetism.

  6. Revisiting the Wess-Zumino-Witten Term in Nuclear and Quark Matter under Magnetic Fields and Rotation

    hep-th 2026-07 accept novelty 5.0 of 10

Anomalous WZW terms for Nf=2,3 dense QCD yield B·∇ϕ and Ω·∇ϕ couplings of π0, η, η' that stabilize chiral soliton lattices under magnetic fields and rotation.

  7. Event-by-event vortex rings in fixed-target p+Ar collisions

    nucl-th 2025-08 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Hydrodynamic simulations predict lambda polarization in p+Ar collisions that is six times larger for strong early longitudinal flow than for Bjorken flow, with an anti-lambda sign flip at weak flow, testable at LHCb SMOG.

  8. Exploring Data-Driven Corrections for $\phi$-Meson Global Spin Alignment Measurements

    nucl-ex 2025-08 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

A data-driven correction built from combinatorial kaon pairs inside the phi mass window is tested with toy Monte Carlo, showing partial success and clear shortcomings.

  9. Spin polarization from nucleon-nucleon scatterings in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions

    nucl-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Nucleon-nucleon scatterings with phase-shift-derived spin changes and rigorous angular momentum conservation generate 1-2% spin polarization in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions.

  10. Initial conditions and bulk viscosity effects on $\Lambda$ polarization in high-energy heavy ion collisions

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Bulk viscosity determines the sign of longitudinal Lambda polarization at LHC energies in hydrodynamic simulations, and the azimuthal dependence of transverse polarization is sensitive to initial-state choices.
