We compute the Polyakov loop potential in Yang--Mills theory from the fully dressed primitively divergent correlation functions only. This is done in a variety of functional approaches ranging from functional renormalisation group equations over Dyson--Schwinger equations to two-particle irreducible functionals. We present a confinement criterion that links the infrared behaviour of propagators and vertices to the Polyakov loop expectation value. The present work extends the works of [1-3] to general functional methods and sharpens the confinement criterion presented there. The computations are based on the thermal correlation functions in the Landau gauge calculated in [4-6].

  1. Gauge-Fermion Cartography: from confinement and chiral symmetry breaking to conformality

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A non-perturbative fRG calculation charts confinement and chiral symmetry breaking across flavour number and predicts the conformal window boundary at Nf = 9.60 for Nc = 3.

  2. Gravitational Waves from Confinement in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills Theory

    hep-ph 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For pure SU(N) Yang-Mills dark sectors, confinement transitions produce gravitational waves too weak for LISA, ET, CE, DECIGO or BBO, with peak amplitude at N≈20 and a large-N decay h²Ω_peak ∝ N^{-14/3}.

  3. Physics of the gluon mass gap

    hep-ph 2025-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The gluon mass gap, defined as the complex pole of the gluon propagator, is linearly tied to the deconfinement temperature, and both Tc and fπ are insensitive to deep-infrared deformations below the infrared inflection point.

  4. Lee Yang edge singularities of QCD in association with Roberge-Weiss phase transition and chiral phase transition

    hep-ph 2025-04 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Including a confining background field in Dyson-Schwinger equations makes Lee-Yang edge singularities terminate at the Roberge-Weiss line, mu_i = pi T / 3, above T = 0.235 GeV, while leaving the critical exponent unchanged.

  5. The equation of state and surface tension of QCD in the first order phase transition region

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A parametrized order-parameter model yields the equation of state, spinodal boundaries, and surface tension for the first-order QCD phase transition.

  6. Gluon mass scale through the Schwinger mechanism

    hep-ph 2025-01 conditional novelty 2.0 of 10

A comprehensive review showing how massless composite poles in QCD vertices can generate the gluon mass scale, with a BSE-based computation reaching m=367 MeV against the 354 MeV lattice value.
