We derive the quadratic action for the physical degrees of freedom of massless spin-0, spin-1, and spin-2 perturbations on a Schwarzschild--(A)dS background in arbitrary dimensions. We then use these results to compute the static response of asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black holes to external fields. Our analysis reproduces known facts about black hole Love numbers, in particular that they vanish for all types of perturbation in four spacetime dimensions, but also leads to new results. For instance, we find that neutral Schwarzschild black holes polarize in the presence of an electromagnetic background in any number of spacetime dimensions except four. Moreover, we calculate for the first time black hole Love numbers for vector-type gravitational perturbations in higher dimensions and find that they generically do not vanish. Along the way, we shed some light on an apparent discrepancy between previous results in the literature, and clarify some aspects of the matching between perturbative calculations of static response on a Schwarzschild background and the point-particle effective theory

A shell-based EFT computes scalar Love numbers for Schwarzschild black holes through O(G^9) and conjectures an all-orders Riemann-zeta structure.

  2. Multipolar static tidal response of Schwarzschild black holes in cubic gravity: a metric-action derivation of tidal running

    gr-qc 2026-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

In cubic Weyl gravity, the metric-field derivation reproduces the known canonical electric beta functions, proves the quadrupole is the unique non-running electric multipole via an L-6 source factor, and gives explici...

  3. A Bound on the Dynamical Love Number

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Schwarz–Pick applied to the rescaled retarded tidal response bounds dynamical Love numbers for neutron stars by the static Love number and spectral gap, and constrains black-hole tidal heating.

  4. Matching Tidal Deformability (Wilson) Coefficients to Black Hole Love Numbers in Higher-Curvature Gravity

    gr-qc 2026-04 accept novelty 7.0 of 10

Wilson coefficients in higher-curvature EFTs equal point-particle counterterms plus finite-size Love-number pieces; standard GR matching fails and is corrected for cubic gravity.

  5. Dynamical Tidal Response of Schwarzschild Black Holes

    gr-qc 2025-11 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The dynamical Love numbers of a Schwarzschild black hole are nonzero at quadratic order in frequency, run logarithmically with a coefficient set by dissipation, and are now matched including their finite, scheme-depen...

  6. On the logarithmic Love number of black holes beyond general relativity

    gr-qc 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Logarithmic black hole Love numbers are fixed directly by the Taylor coefficients of the perturbation equation, and perturbative deviations from Schwarzschild/Reissner-Nordström force non-zero running.

  7. Tidal deformation of an accreting compact object

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

For perfectly reflecting Schwarzschild-like ECOs, the log-compactness scaling of static scalar and spin-1 Love numbers survives a thin accretion disk, which mainly amplifies the response magnitude.
