We propose a new test of strong-field general relativity (GR) based on the universal interferometric signature of the black hole photon ring. The photon ring is a narrow ring-shaped feature, predicted by GR but not yet observed, that appears on images of sources near a black hole. It is caused by extreme bending of light within a few Schwarzschild radii of the event horizon and provides a direct probe of the unstable bound photon orbits of the Kerr geometry. We show that the precise shape of the observable photon ring is remarkably insensitive to the astronomical source profile and can therefore be used as a stringent test of GR. We forecast that a tailored space-based interferometry experiment targeting M87* could test the Kerr nature of the source to the sub-sub-percent level.

  1. The glow of eternal black holes

    gr-qc 2026-08 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

An eternal Schwarzschild black hole with an emitting surface at r=r_m would show a bright spot inside its shadow, whose interferometric visibility decays exponentially with baseline length.

  2. Dark matter environments and safeguards for spacetime inference from horizon scale interferometry

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Using public 2017 M87* closure data, a frozen Kerr source fails an absolute adequacy test and the differential tidal-charge response fails numerical convergence, so no posterior or bound is reported.

  3. Evaporating cosmologically coupled black holes

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

If a black hole's mass grows with cosmic expansion, Hawking evaporation is slowed or reversed, weakening gamma-ray bounds on primordial black holes.

  4. Light rings, gravitational lensing, and ISCOs of exotic compact objects in Einstein-scalar-Maxwell theories

    gr-qc 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A new family of shell-like, charged, horizonless compact objects is constructed in Einstein-scalar-Maxwell theory, with photon-ring, lensing, and ISCO predictions.

  5. Horizonless star based on regular black hole with finite radius and its observational signatures

    gr-qc 2025-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A finite-radius Hayward metric turned into an anisotropic gravastar predicts chaotic photon rings and gravitational-wave echo trains above a compactness threshold x_m, but the GW170817 72 Hz match forces a very large ...

  6. Schwarzschild Black Holes Immersed in Born-Infeld Magnetic Fields and Their Observational Signatures

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Numerically solving full Born-Infeld magnetic fields around a Schwarzschild black hole makes meridional photon orbits prolate and elongates the black hole shadow along the polar axis at high inclination.

  7. Null orbits and shadows in the Ernst-Wild geometry: insights for black holes immersed in a magnetic field

    gr-qc 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For a magnetized Kerr-Newman (Ernst-Wild) black hole, this paper derives perturbative formulas for light ring radii, orbital frequencies, and Lyapunov exponents as functions of magnetic field and spin, and checks the ...

  8. Influence of Observer Inclination and Spacetime Structure on Photon Ring Observables

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For Johannsen-Psaltis spacetimes, the polar photon-ring time delay depends only on spin and shadow size, while the azimuthal shift probes the metric ratio F/N, enabling future spin and frame-dragging tests.

  9. Anisotropic gravastar as horizonless regular black hole spacetime and its images illuminated by thin accretion disk

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The authors build an anisotropic gravastar model whose pressure profile and cut-off make it interpolate between a Hayward regular black hole and a horizonless ultracompact star, then compute shadow images for two accr...

  10. Polarization-dependent observational signatures of Weyl-coupled photons around a black hole

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.5 of 10

Weyl-coupled photons on Schwarzschild produce a polarization-split double shadow (62% edge separation at α/M²=0.75) and a parity-protected backward birefringence signal that vanishes at α=0.

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Keeping the nonareal polymer angular sector in a polymer-quintessence thin-shell wormhole adds a momentum-flux term that reshapes stability, thermodynamics, and cross-throat image branches.
