The standard prescription for computing Wilson loops in the AdS/CFT correspondence in the large coupling regime and tree-level involves minimizing the string action. In many cases the action has more than one saddle point as in the simple example studied in this paper, where there are two 1/4 BPS string solutions, one a minimum and the other not. Like in the case of the regular circular loop the perturbative expansion seems to be captured by a free matrix model. This gives enough analytic control to extrapolate from weak to strong coupling and find both saddle points in the asymptotic expansion of the matrix model. The calculation also suggests a new BMN-like limit for nearly BPS Wilson loop operators.

  1. Bremsstrahlung function in $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs far beyond the supergravity limit

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Exact large-N and strong-coupling results for Bremsstrahlung function in E-theory and D-theory N=2 SCFTs via matrix models, with closed-form non-perturbative contributions.

  2. Combinatorics of Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The paper expresses connected correlators of multiply-wound Wilson loops in N=4 SYM through explicit matrix-trace formulas, including a new inverse relation verified numerically up to order eight.

  3. Non-perturbative corrections in the semi-classical limit of double-scaled SYK

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Non-perturbative corrections in the small-coupling limit of the double-scaled SYK partition function are resummed into a cubic power of the Dedekind eta function, in both the low-energy and low-temperature limits.
