A six-parameter family of five-dimensional black hole solutions is constructed which are labeled by their mass, two asymptotic scalar fields and three charges. It is shown that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is exactly matched, arbitrarily far from extremality, by a simple but mysterious duality-invariant extension of previously derived formulae for the number of D-brane states in string theory.

  1. Classical Unattainability of Extremality in non-BPS D-brane Systems

    hep-th 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0

For a non-BPS four-charge D-brane system in N=8 string theory, the worldline potential has no classical zero-energy minimum, so extremality is unattainable; entropy is proposed as the logarithm of the number of isolat...

Microscopic D-brane description of non-supersymmetric extremal black holes yields a unique ground state with non-zero energy, confirming absence of degeneracy.
