We review the history of the parallel tempering simulation method. From its origins in data analysis, the parallel tempering method has become a standard workhorse of physiochemical simulations. We discuss the theory behind the method and its various generalizations. We mention a selected set of the many applications that have become possible with the introduction of parallel tempering and we suggest several promising avenues for future research.

  1. A story about a tipsy kangaroo: Reversible jump MCMC for model selection in the analysis of gravitational-wave signals from the coalescence of compact objects

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0

A single RJMCMC run can rank BBH, NSBH, and BNS waveform models and deliver the favored model's parameter posteriors, validated on injections and two real GW events.

  2. PSRDISP: A novel approach to modeling dispersive processes in single-pulsar noise analysis using epoch-wise dispersion measures

    astro-ph.IM 2026-07 unverdicted novelty 6.0

PSRDISP characterises deterministic and stochastic dispersive processes via Gaussian processes on epoch-wise DM estimates, recovering injected signals on simulated narrowband and wideband pulsar timing data.

  3. PSRDISP: A novel approach to modeling dispersive processes in single-pulsar noise analysis using epoch-wise dispersion measures

    astro-ph.IM 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

PSRDISP is a Gaussian-process framework that fits dispersion-measure and solar-wind noise directly to epoch-wise dispersion measures, recovering injected signals in simulated pulsar data.

  4. PSRDISP: A novel approach to modeling dispersive processes in single-pulsar noise analysis using epoch-wise dispersion measures

    astro-ph.IM 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0

A Fourier-domain Gaussian process fit to epoch-wise pulsar dispersion measures recovers injected DM and solar-wind noise in simulated narrowband and wideband timing data.

  5. Pre-localization of Massive Black Hole Binaries in the Millihertz Band

    gr-qc 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

A neural spline flow pipeline performs amortized inference on millihertz MBHB signals, delivering ~20 deg² pre-merger sky localizations in ~1 minute while matching PTMCMC sky modes and parameter uncertainties.

  6. Asteroseismology of solar-type stars

    astro-ph.SR 2019-06 unverdicted novelty 2.0

This review summarizes the development, techniques, and open questions in asteroseismology of solar-type stars whose oscillations are stochastically excited by surface convection.
