This Snowmass 2021 White Paper describes the Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4 project CMB-S4, which is designed to cross critical thresholds in our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. We provide an overview of the science case, the technical design, and project plan.

  1. Prominent enhancement of axion thermalization rate from axion-kaon interactions

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Axion-kaon scattering, previously omitted from axion thermalization calculations, exceeds the axion-pion channel near T=130 MeV and tightens the Planck Delta N_eff bound on f_a by about 30%.

  2. Cosmological evolution with decaying dark matter: an integral-equation approach

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

CLASSIER-DDM evaluates generic two-body decaying dark matter perturbations via iterative integral equations at O(0.1%) accuracy and O(1 min) cost without a Boltzmann hierarchy or fluid approximation.

  3. Naturally quality-safe GeV axion with charm coupling

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Coupling the GeV-scale QCD axion to charm instead of light quarks avoids the isospin problem and yields BR(B→Kσ) ~ 2×10^-5 consistent with Belle II, at the price of a small scalar quartic requiring protection.

  4. Assessing the large-scale angular clustering of UNIONS Lyman Break Galaxies via cross-correlations

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

UNIONS Lyman-break galaxy auto-clustering is unusable at large scales due to imaging systematics, but LBG x CMB-lensing and LBG x quasar cross-spectra are measured robustly, with amplitudes consistent with predictions.

  5. Primordial Black Hole from Tensor-induced Density Fluctuation: First-order Phase Transitions and Domain Walls

    astro-ph.CO 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Tensor perturbations from FOPT and domain-wall sources are claimed to induce second-order scalar perturbations large enough to form primordial black holes, potentially all of the dark matter.

  6. Learning Cosmology from Nearest Neighbour Statistics

    astro-ph.CO 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Nearest-neighbour distance maps, combined with kNN-CDFs in a hybrid neural network, constrain Ωm and σ8 from Quijote halos with R2=0.80 and 0.93, matching or beating point-cloud methods at a fraction of the compute.

  7. Simulating Partial Sky Cosmic Microwave Background Maps with 3D Fast Fourier Transforms

    astro-ph.CO 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A 3D fast Fourier transform method with a linear-programming-derived power spectrum simulates CMB maps on partial-sky patches, with operation-count scaling suggesting speed advantages over HEALPix for some survey sizes.

  8. A Search for Millimeter-Bright Blazars as Astrophysical Neutrino Sources

    astro-ph.HE 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

No significant correlation is found between ACT millimeter blazar activity and IceCube neutrinos, bounding millimeter-bright blazars to roughly five percent of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux.

  9. Rapid and accurate numerical evolution of linear cosmological perturbations with non-cold relics

    astro-ph.CO 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

CLASSIER computes cosmological perturbation spectra with non-cold relics using iterated integral equations and non-uniform fast Fourier transforms, matching a converged Boltzmann hierarchy to <0.01% in the matter powe...

  10. Attention-based Neural Network Emulators for Multi-Probe Data Vectors Part III: Modeling The Next Generation Surveys

    astro-ph.CO 2025-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A transformer-based emulator reproduces CAMB CMB TT, TE, and EE power spectra within cosmic variance errors across a wide Lambda-CDM parameter space, with outlier fractions below 10% for future survey configurations.

  11. CMB lensing tomography with clustering estimation of lens redshift distributions

    astro-ph.CO 2025-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Clustering redshifts reconstruct the NVSS+SUMSS radio galaxy kernel, giving sigma_8 = 0.86 (+0.12/-0.09) from Planck PR4 CMB lensing cross-correlation, consistent with Planck.
