Light, asteroid-mass primordial black holes, with lifetimes in the range between hundreds to several millions times the age of the universe, are well-motivated candidates for the cosmological dark matter. Using archival COMPTEL data, we improve over current constraints on the allowed parameter space of primordial black holes as dark matter by studying their evaporation to soft gamma-rays in nearby astrophysical structures. We point out that a new generation of proposed MeV gamma-ray telescopes will offer the unique opportunity to directly detect Hawking evaporation from observations of nearby dark matter dense regions and to constrain, or discover, the primordial black hole dark matter.

Primordial black hole in Lorentz-violating theories: Insights from Bumblebee gravity
Bumblebee gravity enhances primordial black hole abundance through three mechanisms, but the model harbors a ghost instability and a tachyonic instability that make it cosmologically unviable.

Gravitational wave signatures of primordial black hole accretion during early matter domination
PBHs that form in a radiation era and accrete during an early matter era could produce a two-peak GW background detectable by LISA or BBO for asteroid-mass PBHs as all of dark matter.

Primordial black holes from Q-balls produced in a first-order phase transition
Bosons trapped in false-vacuum remnants of a dark first-order phase transition can form Q-balls that collapse into primordial black holes, producing correlated gravitational-wave and gamma-ray signals.

Black Hole Explosions as Probes of New Physics
This paper derives analytic scalings connecting the gamma-ray lightcurve of an evaporating primordial black hole to the mass and number of hidden-sector degrees of freedom and to the memory-burden index of quantum gravity.

PBH formation and Gravitational Waves as Multi-messenger Signals of First-order Phase Transitions
False-vacuum collapse during first-order phase transitions can form PBHs and emit GWs across a broad parameter range, and MeV-scale classically conformal U(1)_{B-L} symmetry breaking has the largest region where both ...

Picolensing as a Probe of Primordial Black Hole Dark Matter
Asteroid-mass primordial black hole dark matter could be probed by picolensing of gamma-ray bursts, but only with detector separations of at least Earth-L2 distance once realistic GRB size uncertainties are included.

Probing Double-Peaked Gamma-Ray Spectra from Primordial Black Holes with Next-Generation Gamma-Ray Experiments
A likelihood forecast shows e-ASTROGAM could, in parts of the f1-f2 plane, distinguish double-peaked from single-peaked PBH gamma-ray spectra in the 1e15 to 1e17 g mass window.

Searching for Dark Matter with MeVCube
Using Fisher forecasting, the author shows that a 2U to 12U MeVCube CubeSat could probe new dark matter parameter space for evaporating primordial black holes and MeV-scale decaying or annihilating dark matter.
