The most well-known mechanism for fermions to acquire a mass is the Nambu-Goldstone-Anderson-Higgs mechanism, i.e. after a spontaneous symmetry breaking, a bosonic field that couples to the fermion mass term condenses, which grants a mass gap for the fermionic excitation. In the last few years, it was gradually understood that there is a new mechanism of mass generation for fermions without involving any symmetry breaking within an anomaly-free symmetry group. This new mechanism is generally referred to as the "Symmetric Mass Generation (SMG)." It is realized that the SMG has deep connections with interacting topological insulator/superconductors, symmetry-protected topological states, perturbative local and non-perturbative global anomaly cancellations, and deconfined quantum criticality. It has strong implications for the lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories. This article defines the SMG, summarizes current numerical results, introduces a novel unifying theoretical framework (including the parton-Higgs and the s-confinement mechanisms, as well as the symmetry-extension construction), and overviews various features and applications of SMG.

Exactly Solvable 1+1d Chiral Lattice Gauge Theories
Anomaly-free chiral U(1) gauge theories in 1+1 dimensions can be written as quadratic, exactly solvable lattice Hamiltonians, with the 34-50 model as an explicit example.

Ginsparg-Wilson Hamiltonians with Improved Chiral Symmetry
A tunable family of Ginsparg-Wilson Hamiltonians is constructed in which the chiral charge becomes progressively more quantized as k increases, though locality degrades.

Bosonization versus the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem
The 2D modified Villain model's Weyl operators reproduce free Dirac correlations in the continuum, and their no-doubler Dirac kernel is non-local, showing exactly how bosonization evades the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem.

Heterotic Ouroboros
The seven non-supersymmetric heterotic strings are re-derived from M-theory on S^1∨S^1 via an 'ouroboros' type I' configuration whose rules are fitted to reproduce the known spectra; new junctions among the theories a...

Unpaired Weyl fermion on an axion string in a finite lattice
A modified crossed-domain-wall axion string on an N=28 periodic lattice produces an unpaired, single-chirality Weyl fermion branch, extending the Kaplan-Sen disk construction to string defects.
