We obtain exact expressions for the quasi-normal modes of various spin for the BTZ black hole. These modes determine the relaxation time of black hole perturbations. Exact agreement is found between the quasi-normal frequencies and the location of the poles of the retarded correlation function of the corresponding perturbations in the dual conformal field theory. This then provides a new quantitative test of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

  1. The Effects of Near-AdS$_2$ Backreaction on Matter Fields

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Backreaction of near-AdS2 geometry gives a temperature correction to scalar correlators that for massive fields needs metric backreaction, matches BTZ, and corrects the standard prescription.

  2. Scalar fields and 3D Flat Space Cosmologies

    hep-th 2025-06 reject novelty 7.0 of 10

A direct bulk derivation of scalar quasi-normal modes in 3D flat space cosmologies is presented, using a hard-wall boundary condition and complex momenta, together with one-loop partition functions computed in simplif...

  3. Hawking radiation from black holes in 2+1 dimensions

    gr-qc 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

In 2+1 dimensions, black hole horizons are quantized into lengths 8π ℓ_P n, from which a length ensemble directly yields the Hawking blackbody spectrum with Tolman-modified temperature.

  4. Effective dynamics of open 2D CFTs

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The momentum-space thermal four-point response function of scalar primaries in an arbitrary 2D CFT is expressed as an infinite sum over global conformal blocks of Meijer G-functions.

  5. Instability of Black Holes in AdS$_3 \times S^3$

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Near-extremal AdS3 x S3 black holes are thermodynamically and dynamically unstable, decaying to a central black hole plus chiral primaries or new macroscopic giant strings.

  6. Holographic D-brane constructions with dynamical gauge fields

    hep-th 2025-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Equips bottom-up holographic D-brane models with dynamical boundary gauge fields and shows that quasinormal mode dispersion relations in equilibrium and nonequilibrium states match hydrodynamics with dynamical U(1) symmetry.

  7. Photon rings in a holographic toy model

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In warped AdS3 black holes, the eikonal quasinormal-mode spectrum is governed exactly by the photon ring's orbital frequency and Lyapunov exponent, with different boundary conditions picking out the outer or inner ring.
