In 1973 two Salam prot\'{e}g\'{e}s (Derek Capper and the author) discovered that the conformal invariance under Weyl rescalings of the metric tensor $g_{\mu\nu}(x)\rightarrow\Omega^2(x)g_{\mu\nu}(x)$ displayed by classical massless field systems in interaction with gravity no longer survives in the quantum theory. Since then these Weyl anomalies have found a variety of applications in black hole physics, cosmology, string theory and statistical mechanics. We give a nostalgic review. 1. Non-Abelian and Type-A Conformal Anomalies from Euler Descent

    hep-th 2026-01 conditional novelty 7.0

Non-Abelian conformal anomalies are classified via Stora-Zumino descent from the Euler class, placing them on equal footing with perturbative anomalies and enabling WZW terms for anomaly matching.

  2. Breakdown of Semiclassical Gravity in Four-Dimensional Black Hole Evaporation

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Semiclassical black hole evaporation in four dimensions produces a thunderbolt singularity signaling breakdown of the effective theory at large distances.

  3. Conformally Invariant Corrections to the Anomaly-Induced Effective Action and Black Hole Evaporation in Four Dimensions

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Conformally invariant corrections to the anomaly-induced effective action produce a one-parameter family of quantum hair for Schwarzschild black holes that modifies the near-horizon stress tensor in a static approximation.

  4. Nonadditivity in Quantum Field Theory: Replica Energies, Scaling Filters, and the Renormalization Group

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Replica energy and associated differential filters isolate nonadditive contributions in QFT partition functions, yielding universal data such as central charge, sphere free energy F, and defect entropies.

  5. Trace anomaly, effective approach, and gravitational potential

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Anomaly-induced corrections to the Newtonian potential in the Boulware vacuum disagree with effective quantum gravity results unless the long-distance stress tensor asymptotics are altered.

  8. Conformal anomaly in a vector field model with auxiliary scalar field

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 4.0

An auxiliary scalar compensator in a vector field model allows conformal formulation in D≠4 and yields independent scalar dynamics after the 4D limit.

  9. Conformal anomaly in a vector field model with auxiliary scalar field

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 4.0

An auxiliary scalar compensator enables conformal regularization of a vector field model in D ≠ 4, resulting in independent scalar dynamics and interesting properties in the four-dimensional limit.

  10. Inside astronomically realistic black holes

    gr-qc 2019-07 unverdicted novelty 4.0

Schwarzschild singularities are surfaces with diverging Hawking radiation while accreting Kerr black holes undergo Poisson-Israel inflation followed by BKL oscillatory collapse to a spacelike singularity.

  11. The fall and the rise of Weyl gauge theory

    gr-qc 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 2.0

Weyl gauge theory of gravity is revived as the only anomaly-free gauge theory of spacetime symmetry with a physical gauge boson, exact geometric interpretation, all scales of geometric origin, and it generates the Ein...
