We consider the uncertainty in the arm length of an interferometer due to metric fluctuations from the quantum nature of gravity, proposing a concrete microscopic model of energy fluctuations in holographic degrees of freedom on the surface bounding a causally connected region of spacetime. In our model, fluctuations longitudinal to the beam direction accumulate in the infrared and feature strong long distance correlation in the transverse direction. This leads to a signal that could be observed in a gravitational wave interferometer. We connect the positional uncertainty principle arising from our calculations to the 't Hooft gravitational S-matrix.

  1. JT gravity on the worldline

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Coupling a worldline observer to JT gravity replaces its evolution operator by an exactly computed average over fluctuating Euclidean times; the fluctuations are small in the disk but large on the double trumpet.

  2. Quantization of Gravity on Null Hypersurfaces

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

An operator-algebraic quantization of the characteristic initial-value problem yields a candidate on-shell algebra for a gravitational subregion bounded by two null hypersurfaces.

  3. Quantum Area Fluctuations from Gravitational Phase Space

    hep-th 2025-04 reject novelty 7.0 of 10

The variance of area fluctuations of a causal diamond in Minkowski spacetime is claimed to satisfy ⟨(ΔA)²⟩ ≥ (2πG/d)⟨A⟩, using quantized gravitational phase space on a stretched horizon.

  4. Falling through the horizon of a quantum black hole

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.5 of 10

Gravitational dressing in JT gravity lets an infalling Unruh-DeWitt detector detect the horizon location and temperature locally, violating the equivalence principle without a firewall.

  5. Geometric noise spectrum in interferometers

    hep-th 2026-01 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

The noise spectrum an interferometer would see from quantum spacetime jitter is computed for vacuum, thermal, squeezed, and scalar-backreaction states; all are Planck-suppressed.

  6. From Asymptotically Flat Gravity to Finite Causal Diamonds

    hep-th 2025-12 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

The soft sector phase space of asymptotically flat gravity equals the phase space of radial size fluctuations of a finite causal diamond in flat spacetime.

  7. Entanglement Entropy of Quantum Corners

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For a two-dimensional corner symmetry algebra, coherent corner states give an entanglement entropy that scales with the area when mapped to near-extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes.

  8. Effective density matrix for vacua in asymptotically flat gravity

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

The vacuum of a large causal diamond in asymptotically flat gravity is claimed to be a Gaussian in the supertranslation Goldstone mode, giving modular Hamiltonian variance A/epsilon squared.

  9. Observer Time from Causality in Perturbative Quantum Gravity

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A lightbulb-and-mirror protocol defines diffeomorphism-invariant elapsed proper time, and its leading quantum gravity correction makes the time a noncommuting quantum operator.

  10. Pattern of perturbations from a coherent quantum inflationary horizon

    astro-ph.CO 2019-08 reject novelty 5.0 of 10

Holographic inflation is argued to imprint exact large-angle symmetries on the cosmic microwave background, most notably a vanishing temperature correlation at 90 degrees of angular separation.

  11. Correlation functions of von Neumann entropy

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Two-point correlators of modular Hamiltonians obey entropy-like properties and equal the stress-tensor conformal block for spherical regions in CFT, including imaginary-time separations.
