It is well known that asymptotically flat black holes in general relativity have a vanishing static, conservative tidal response. We show that this is a result of linearly realized symmetries governing static (spin 0,1,2) perturbations around black holes. The symmetries have a geometric origin: in the scalar case, they arise from the (E)AdS isometries of a dimensionally reduced black hole spacetime. Underlying the symmetries is a ladder structure which can be used to construct the full tower of solutions, and derive their general properties: (1) solutions that decay with radius spontaneously break the symmetries, and must diverge at the horizon; (2) solutions regular at the horizon respect the symmetries, and take the form of a finite polynomial that grows with radius. Taken together, these two properties imply that static response coefficients -- and in particular Love numbers -- vanish. Moreover, property (1) is consistent with the absence of black holes with linear (perturbative) hair. We also discuss the manifestation of these symmetries in the effective point particle description of a black hole, showing explicitly that for scalar probes the worldline couplings associated with a non-trivial tidal response and scalar hair must vanish in order for the symmetries to be preserved.

Love numbers of black p-branes: fine tuning, Love symmetries, and their geometrization
Scalar Love numbers of non-dilatonic black p-branes vanish for integer rescaled multipoles, extremal p-branes give exactly zero static Love numbers, and the hidden symmetries behind these vanishings become near-horizo...

Multipolar static tidal response of Schwarzschild black holes in cubic gravity: a metric-action derivation of tidal running
In cubic Weyl gravity, the metric-field derivation reproduces the known canonical electric beta functions, proves the quadrupole is the unique non-running electric multipole via an L-6 source factor, and gives explici...

Dynamical Tidal Response of Schwarzschild Black Holes
The dynamical Love numbers of a Schwarzschild black hole are nonzero at quadratic order in frequency, run logarithmically with a coefficient set by dissipation, and are now matched including their finite, scheme-depen...

One Membrane to Love them all: Tidal deformations of compact objects from the membrane paradigm
The tidal deformability of any compact object in vacuum general relativity can be encoded in the bulk and shear viscosity of a fictitious membrane, with explicit formulas for the electric and magnetic Love numbers.

Why there is no Love in black holes
Stationary, axisymmetric Kerr perturbations carry an exact SL(2,R) conformal symmetry, and its representation structure forbids tidal response: black hole Love numbers vanish.

The Vanishing of the Non-linear Static Love Number of Kerr Black Holes and the Role of Symmetries
Using the Ernst formalism, the paper argues that the static quadrupole tidal Love number of a Kerr black hole vanishes at full nonlinear order, because a decaying tidal mode would create a naked curvature singularity ...
