abstract

The strong discrepancy between local and inverse distance ladder estimates of the Hubble constant $H_0$ could be pointing towards new physics beyond $\Lambda$CDM. Several attempts to address this tension through new physics rely on extended models, featuring extra free parameters beyond the 6 $\Lambda$CDM parameters. However, marginalizing over extra parameters has the effect of broadening the uncertainties on the inferred parameters, and it is often the case that within these models the $H_0$ tension is addressed due to larger uncertainties rather than a genuine shift in the central value of $H_0$. What happens if a physical theory is able to fix the extra parameters to a specific set of non-standard values? The degrees of freedom of the model are reduced with respect to the standard case where the extra parameters are free to vary. Focusing on the dark energy equation of state $w$ and the effective number of relativistic species $N_{\rm eff}$, I find that physical theories able to fix $w \approx -1.3$ or $N_{\rm eff} \approx 3.95$ would lead to an estimate of $H_0$ from CMB, BAO, and SNeIa data in perfect agreement with the local distance ladder estimate, without broadening its uncertainty. These two non-standard models are, from a model-selection perspective, strongly disfavoured with respect to $\Lambda$CDM. However, models that predict $N_{\rm eff} \approx 3.45$ would be able to bring the tension down to $1.5\sigma$ while only being weakly disfavored with respect to $\Lambda$CDM, whereas models that predict $w \approx -1.1$ would be able to bring the tension down to $2\sigma$ (at the cost of the preference for $\Lambda$CDM being definite). Finally, I estimate dimensionless multipliers relating variations in $H_0$ to variations in $w$ and $N_{\rm eff}$, which can be used to repeat the analysis of this paper in light of future more precise local distance ladder estimates of $H_0$.

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.5 of 10

Fisher forecasts show angular cross-correlations between distance indicators and galaxy catalogs can constrain a constant calibration offset to ~0.05 mag and H0 to ~1.81 km/s/Mpc with future LSST+DESI data.

  2. Hubble tension: the shape wall

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

  3. BAO miscalibration cannot rescue late-time solutions to the Hubble tension

    astro-ph.CO 2025-10 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

Even after rescaling BAO data to prefer H0≈73 km/s/Mpc, none of six tested late-time dark-energy models can resolve the Hubble tension once unanchored SNeIa and CMB geometry are included.

  4. Observational implications of Wald-Gauss-Bonnet topological dark energy

    gr-qc 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Wald-Gauss-Bonnet topological dark energy is viable against late-universe data but statistically loses to ΛCDM, and its perturbations are nearly indistinguishable from ΛCDM.

  5. Prospects for measuring neutrino mass with 21-cm forest

    astro-ph.CO 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Using an analytic halo model, the authors forecast that 21-cm forest observations with SKA-LOW could constrain the total neutrino mass to about 0.1 eV, potentially distinguishing neutrino mass hierarchies.

  6. Impact of DESI BAO Data on Inflationary Parameters: stability against late-time new physics

    astro-ph.CO 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Using CMB, supernova, and DESI BAO data, this study finds that inflationary parameters n_s and A_s remain stable (shifts under 1%) when SDSS BAO data is replaced by DESI BAO data across several late-time models.

  7. General parametrization for energy density of quintessence field

    astro-ph.CO 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A step-like parametrization of quintessence energy density reproduces all three known dark energy dynamics across redshifts, but cosmological data still prefer ΛCDM except in the CPL model.

  8. Upper limits on dark energy-dark matter interaction from DESI DR2 in a field-theoretic analysis

    astro-ph.CO 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A field-theoretic calculation finds that dark energy and dark matter interact only very weakly, and DESI data rule out the strong-interaction regime that would change quintessence behavior.

  9. Adiabatic Perturbations in GW170817-Compatible Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Inflation

    gr-qc 2026-08 reject novelty 5.0 of 10

In Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet inflation, the unconstrained GW170817-compatible models keep perturbations adiabatic, while the constrained class violates adiabaticity in the last few e-foldings.

  10. Hubble Tension as an Effect of Horizon Entanglement Nonequilibrium

    astro-ph.CO 2026-01 reject novelty 5.0 of 10

A phenomenological 'horizon entanglement deficit' with the form ρ ∝ H² is fit to low-z data under a forced H0=73 prior; the nonzero amplitude is a restatement of that prior.

  11. Robust Preference for Dark Sector Interactions

    astro-ph.CO 2026-01 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Interacting dark matter–dark energy models fit DESI BAO and CMB data as well as evolving-dark-energy (CPL) models, with a coupling preference that persists under DES-Dovekie supernova recalibration.

    gr-qc 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Exponential f(R) gravity with massive neutrinos fits current expansion data about as well as ΛCDM and yields slightly different H0 and Σmν constraints, but does not eliminate the Hubble tension.

  13. Model-independent late-universe measurements of $H_0$ and $\Omega_K$ with the parametrization based on cosmic age-improved inverse distance ladder

    astro-ph.CO 2025-10 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A cosmic-age-based inverse distance ladder with DESI DR2, DESY5, SGL, CC and GRB data gives H0=71.59±0.94 km/s/Mpc and ΩK=0.001±0.038.

  14. How Holographic is the Dark Energy? A Spline Nodal reconstruction approach

    astro-ph.CO 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A three-node spline reconstruction of holographic dark energy improves chi-squared over LambdaCDM by about 10 to 12, but Bayesian evidence gives no clear preference.

  15. Illustrating the consequences of a misuse of $\sigma_8$ in cosmology

    astro-ph.CO 2025-01 accept novelty 5.0 of 10

Cosmologists should compare clustering amplitude with the h-independent statistic sigma_12 instead of sigma_8, because sigma_8's smoothing scale shifts with H0 and artificially worsens the growth tension in high-H0 models.

    astro-ph.CO 2019-08 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Cosmological data limit a pre-recombination decaying dark matter fraction to at most about 2.7%, and future kSZ measurements could provide an independent test.

  18. Neutrino mass constraints in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black-hole dark energy model with ACT DR6 and DESI DR2 data

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 4.5 of 10

SdSDE dark energy yields a ~0.16–0.21 eV positive neutrino-mass preference with DESI+ACT data, but χ² strongly favors extended ΛCDM and the shift is likely compensation.

  19. Hubble tension: a short review of theoretical explanations

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 4.0 of 10

A comprehensive review finds no theoretical Hubble-tension solution yet passes all consistency tests; new early-dark-energy chains reach high H0 only when the SH0ES calibration is added.

    astro-ph.CO 2025-10 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

With DESI DR2 BAO plus CMB and a SH0ES prior, the two-parameter eeΛCDM model gives δΛ=-0.41±0.14 and H0=71.9±1.0, easing the Hubble tension to 0.8σ, but SN datasets erase the signal.
